Open Box vs New: What's the Difference?

ZyppCart box filled with headphones, a phone, earbuds, a smartwatch and a speaker

You've probably seen "open box" next to a price that looks too good to be true. In most cases it's simply a great way to save. Here's what it means.

What is an open-box item?

An open-box product is one whose packaging has been opened. That might be a customer return, a display unit or an item whose box was damaged in the warehouse. The product inside is usually the same model you'd buy new.

How is it different from new?

  • Packaging: the box may be opened, re-taped or show wear.
  • Accessories: most items are complete, but always check the listing for what's included.
  • Price: open-box items are typically discounted compared with the same item new.

What to check before you buy

  • Read the listing's condition notes and photos carefully.
  • Check what's included in the box (cables, chargers, manuals).
  • Look at the return terms for open-box items before you order.

Is open box right for you?

If you care more about the product than the packaging, open box is one of the easiest ways to get a better model for your budget. If it's a gift where presentation matters, new may be the better choice.
